How to crop the margins of a PDF
- 1.
Open the PDF
Drop the document onto the area above or choose it from your device. A preview of the first page appears.
- 2.
Enter the margins
Type how many millimetres to cut from each edge. To cut the same amount everywhere, turn on “Same margin on every side” and enter one number.
- 3.
Choose pages
Leave “Pages to crop” empty to crop the whole document, or enter a range such as 1-3, 5.
- 4.
Check the preview
Switch between preview pages to see the crop. The darkened area will be hidden, and the page size before and after cropping is shown below the preview.
- 5.
Save the file
Click “Crop PDF” and download the file, which gets “-cropped” added to its name.
How to enter the margins
Each field sets how many millimetres to cut from one edge: top, right, bottom or left. Decimals work (12.5), and an empty field counts as 0. One inch is 25.4 mm, so a half-inch margin is 12.7 mm.
Example: an A4 scan (210 × 297 mm) has grey strips from the scanner lid along the edges. Enter 15 mm on every side and you keep an area of 180 × 267 mm. To hide only a running header, enter a top margin such as 20 mm and leave the other fields at 0.
The same margins apply to every selected page, including pages of different sizes. If nothing would be left of a page, for instance because the left and right margins together are wider than the page, the tool names that page and will not save the file.
Rotated pages and files that are already cropped
Margins refer to the page as it appears in the preview. If a page has a rotation stored in the file, such as 90° for a landscape table, the “top” margin cuts what is at the top of your screen. The tool converts it to the right edge of the page inside the file.
If the document was cropped before, new margins are measured from the edge you currently see, not from the full sheet. Repeated crops add up.
What happens to content outside the crop
The tool sets the page’s CropBox, the area that browsers and PDF readers display and print. Pages are not turned into images, so text stays selectable and searchable and images keep their quality. The full sheet size (MediaBox) is left as it was.
Content outside the crop is still in the file. A PDF editor can bring it back, and text extraction tools can read it. That makes cropping unsuitable for hiding confidential details such as account numbers or addresses. To remove a part for good, crop the file, convert the pages to images with PDF to JPG and put them back together with JPG to PDF. The images contain only the visible area, but the text will no longer be selectable.
For the same reason, a cropped PDF is not smaller. Its size may differ slightly from the original because the document is saved again.
Privacy and password-protected files
The file is processed in your browser and is never uploaded. The original on your device stays unchanged, and the cropped version downloads as a new file.
Encrypted or password-protected PDFs cannot be edited here because the in-browser library cannot decrypt them. Remove the protection first (for example open the file with its password and use “Print → Save as PDF”) and try again.
Fix sideways pages before cropping with Rotate PDF, and delete pages you do not need with Organize PDF. For photos, use Crop image.
