How to record your screen
- 1.
Set up audio and quality
Toggle “System / tab audio” and “Microphone (voice-over)”, then choose the format (MP4 or WebM) and the quality.
- 2.
Choose what to share
Click “Start recording”. The browser asks whether to share the entire screen, a window or a tab - tick “Share audio” there if you want sound.
- 3.
Record
A timer shows the elapsed time over a live preview. Use “Pause” and “Resume” to skip the boring parts.
- 4.
Stop and download
Click “Stop” (or “Stop sharing” in the browser bar), watch the result and click “Download recording”.
How it works and why it is private
The recorder uses two APIs built into your browser: Screen Capture (getDisplayMedia) to grab the picture at up to 30 fps, and MediaRecorder to encode it. The file is assembled in the memory of this tab - nothing is uploaded to a server. The browser always asks for permission and shows a clear “sharing” indicator while you record.
The recording only exists until you close or reload the tab, so download it first. The file is named like screen-recording-2026-10-11-1430.webm (date and time of the download).
Browser support and audio
- Chrome, Edge, Opera - picture, microphone and system audio. Tab audio works on every OS; audio from the entire screen works on Windows and ChromeOS. WebM always, MP4 in recent versions.
- Firefox - picture and microphone, no system audio, WebM only.
- Safari 14.1+ on macOS - picture and microphone, no system audio.
- Phones and tablets - mobile browsers do not let websites record the screen. On iPhone and iPad add Screen Recording to Control Center; on Android use the Screen record tile in Quick Settings.
When both system audio and the microphone are on, they are mixed into one track. The mic uses echo cancellation and noise suppression. If mic access is refused, recording continues without the voice-over.
MP4 or WebM, and how big the file gets
- MP4 (H.264) - the safest choice for Windows, macOS, phones, PowerPoint and most upload forms.
- WebM (VP9 or VP8) - open format, often a smaller file at the same quality; fine for YouTube, Discord and browsers. It is the default when available.
Size depends on the quality setting: Standard 2.5 Mbps is about 19 MB per minute, High 5 Mbps about 38 MB and Very high 8 Mbps about 60 MB, plus roughly 1 MB per minute of audio at 128 kbps. Static content such as slides or documents usually comes out smaller than games or video. If MP4 is missing from the list, your browser cannot record it - pick WebM and convert later.
Tips for a clean recording
- Share a tab instead of the whole screen when you demo a website - notifications and other windows stay out, and tab audio works everywhere in Chrome and Edge.
- Turn on Do Not Disturb and close windows with private data before you start.
- Match quality to content: Standard for slides, High for tutorials, Very high for fast motion such as games.
- Make a 10 second test to check that both system sound and your voice are audible.
Afterwards you can cut the start and end in Trim video, shrink the file with the video compressor, turn WebM into MP4 in the video converter or make a short clip into a GIF with Video to GIF.
