How to trim a video online
- 1.
Choose a video
Drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file onto the area above, or click to pick it from your device.
- 2.
Mark the section
Move the Start and End sliders, use Start here and End here while the video plays, or type a time in mm:ss.s format, e.g. 1:23.5.
- 3.
Check the preview
Click Play selection to watch exactly the part that will be kept.
- 4.
Trim and download
Click Trim video and download the result in the same format as the original, saved as name-trimmed.mp4 (or .mov, .webm, .mkv).
How precise is the cut?
You set the range in steps of 0.1 second. Simple "lossless" trimmers can only start a clip on a keyframe, which often leaves a few unwanted seconds at the beginning. This tool checks your start point: if it lands on a keyframe, the video is copied without re-encoding and keeps its original quality. If it does not, the video is re-encoded so the result starts exactly where you set it.
The output is never shorter than 0.1 s, and the tool tells you when the whole video is still selected so you do not export an identical copy by mistake.
What format will the result be?
The trimmed file keeps the container of the original: MP4 stays MP4, MOV stays MOV, WebM stays WebM and MKV stays MKV. If the source format cannot be written by the browser, the result is saved as MP4 and the tool says so before you start.
When re-encoding is needed, your browser must have an encoder for the codec (WebCodecs). Some Chromium builds on Linux lack H.264, for example. In that case you get a clear error message; try Chrome or Edge on Windows or macOS, or convert the video to WebM first with the video converter.
Example: cut a 5-minute recording down to 30 seconds
Say you want only the moment from 1:15 to 1:45 of a 5-minute video. Type 1:15 in Start and 1:45 in End, and the clip length shows 0:30.0. The result is about a tenth of the original size, because it holds a tenth of the footage. The result card shows the size before and after, so you can check whether it fits an email attachment. Still too big? Run it through the video compressor.
Common uses and tips
- Social media clips - Reels, Shorts and TikTok accept longer videos, but 15-60 s cuts usually perform best.
- Meeting recordings - drop the minutes of small talk before the real discussion starts.
- Bug reports - keep just the few seconds of a screen recording that show the problem.
The tool keeps one continuous section. To remove something from the middle, trim the two parts separately and join them with merge videos. Turn a short moment into an animation with video to GIF, or keep only the soundtrack with video to MP3.
Trimming runs locally with WebCodecs, so private recordings never leave your device, and your original file stays untouched.
