How to make a passport photo at home
- 1.
Take the photo
Stand facing the camera in front of a plain, light wall in even daylight. Ask someone to take the photo from about 1.5 m (5 ft) at eye level, without flash or portrait mode.
- 2.
Choose the document and upload
Pick a preset (EU/Schengen 35×45 mm, UK, US 2×2 in, Canada, China, Poland) and drop the photo above.
- 3.
Align with the guides
Drag and zoom so that the chin sits on the red line, the top of the head (including hair) is inside the blue band and the eyes are near the dashed eye line. Straighten with the slider if needed.
- 4.
Download
Download a single JPG for online applications, or a 4×6 in / 10×15 cm sheet (JPG) or an A4 sheet (PDF) for printing at 100% scale.

Choose the preset for your document: the frame, the head-height band and the eye line are set from these values. Requirements change from time to time and some offices add rules of their own (background colour, file size in KB) - always check the current rules of the office or embassy you apply to before printing or submitting.
Common requirements
- Plain, light, evenly lit background with no shadows.
- Face straight to the camera, head not tilted, neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open.
- No sunglasses; prescription glasses only if allowed by the country and without glare (the US no longer allows glasses).
- Head coverings only for religious or medical reasons, with the full face visible.
- Sharp photo with natural colours, taken within the last 6 months, no retouching or filters.
How to take a passport photo at home
- Background: stand about 0.5-1 m in front of a plain white or light grey wall, so your shadow does not fall on it.
- Light: face a window with soft daylight; avoid overhead lamps that cast shadows under the eyes and nose. No flash.
- Camera: ask someone to hold the phone at eye level, about 1.5 m (5 ft) away, using the normal (1×) or 2× lens. Selfies and wide-angle lenses distort the nose and make the head look larger; portrait mode blurs the edges of hair.
- Framing: leave space around the head and shoulders - cropping is done here, and a loose frame lets you hit the head-height range exactly.
- Check: after aligning, the tool shows the allowed head height in mm and percent, and warns if the crop is too low-resolution or goes beyond the photo.
Pixels and printing
Pixels = millimetres ÷ 25.4 × DPI. A 35×45 mm photo is 413×531 px at 300 DPI and 827×1063 px at 600 DPI; a 2×2 in photo is 600×600 px at 300 DPI (the US online minimum). A 4×6 in (10×15 cm) print holds up to 8 photos of 35×45 mm or 2 photos of 2×2 in. Print the PDF or JPG at 100% (“actual size”), then measure one photo with a ruler.
