How to add a watermark to a PDF
- 1.
Open the PDF
Drop the document onto the area above or choose it from your device.
- 2.
Choose text or image
Under “Watermark type” pick Text and enter your wording (CONFIDENTIAL by default), or pick Image and choose a PNG, JPG or WebP logo.
- 3.
Set placement and appearance
Choose Center, Top, Bottom or “Pattern (whole page)”, then adjust opacity, rotation and size. For text, also set the colour and bold.
- 4.
Save the file
Check the preview on any page and click “Add watermark and save PDF”. The watermark goes on every page and the file is saved as name-watermarked.pdf.
What a PDF watermark is good for
- Marking document status - CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, COPY, SAMPLE, NOT FOR DISTRIBUTION.
- Protecting copies of IDs and contracts - a line such as “Copy for Acme Bank only, 12 Oct 2026” repeated across the page makes a scanned passport or lease much harder to reuse for anything else. A tiled pattern works better here than one centred stamp.
- Branding - a company logo in the middle or at the bottom of proposals, price lists and reports you send to clients.
Keep in mind that a watermark is a visual element, not encryption. Someone with a PDF editor can remove it, so treat it as a deterrent and a clear label rather than real protection.
Choosing opacity, rotation and size
- Opacity (5-100%, default 25%): 15-30% keeps the mark visible while the text underneath stays easy to read. Above about 50% it starts to get in the way.
- Rotation (-90° to 90° in 5° steps, default 45°): 45° is the classic diagonal from bottom left to top right; 0° gives a horizontal line, which suits Top or Bottom placement.
- Size (5-100%): a percentage of the largest size that fits the page at the chosen rotation. 100% stretches the mark across roughly 90% of the page width or height. Switching to the tiled pattern caps it at 35% automatically, and 25-35% usually looks best there.
Single marks sit at the vertical centre, 15% from the top or 15% from the bottom. The watermark is fitted to every page separately, so documents with mixed sizes and orientations, including pages rotated by 90°, come out right.
Quick settings for common cases
- Internal document: CONFIDENTIAL, Center, 45°, size 100%, opacity 20-25%.
- ID or passport copy for a bank or landlord: “COPY FOR ACME BANK 12 OCT 2026”, Pattern (whole page), 30-45°, size 25-35%, opacity 25-30%.
- Contract draft: DRAFT, Top, 0°, size 40-50%, opacity 30%.
- Company logo: a PNG with a transparent background, Bottom or Center, 0°, size 20-30%, opacity 15-20%.
By default the text is red (#c0392b), bold, 25% opaque and set at 45°. Switch bold off or choose grey if the document will be printed in black and white. Before saving, preview the page with the most text: if the mark hides content, lower the opacity or size.
Fonts, quality and privacy
Text watermarks use the DejaVu Sans font embedded in the PDF, so accented letters and Greek or Cyrillic characters display correctly in any viewer. The mark is drawn on top of the existing pages without re-rendering them, which means text stays selectable and images keep their quality. A transparent PNG gives the cleanest logo; a JPG keeps its white background, so lower the opacity to blend it in.
Everything is processed in your browser and the PDF is never uploaded. Password-protected files must be unlocked first. To number the same pages, use Add page numbers to PDF; to make the file smaller for email afterwards, use Compress PDF.
