Sign a PDF online - draw, type or upload your signature

Add your handwritten signature to a PDF: draw it with a finger or mouse, type your name in a script style, or upload a photo of it. It is an image of a signature (a simple electronic signature), not a certificate-based qualified signature.

This is a graphic signature, not a qualified signature

The tool adds an image of your handwritten signature to the PDF (a graphic signature). It is not a qualified electronic signature and involves no certificate or identity verification. For contracts and documents that legally require an electronic form equivalent to a written one, you need a qualified electronic signature (or a national e-ID scheme).

What kind of signature this is - legally

This tool places an image of your signature on the PDF. In legal terms that is a simple electronic signature: it shows your intent to sign, but it carries no certificate, does not verify who you are and does not seal the document - anyone with the file could copy the image or change the text afterwards without a trace.

Most legal systems still give simple e-signatures real effect. In the European Union, the eIDAS Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 says an electronic signature cannot be denied legal effect or admissibility as evidence just because it is electronic. In the United States, the ESIGN Act and the UETA adopted by most states make e-signatures valid for most contracts, and in the UK the courts have long accepted typed and drawn signatures. What changes is the evidential weight: if the signature is disputed, you must prove it was you.

A qualified electronic signature (QES) under eIDAS is different: it is created with a qualified certificate issued after identity checks, is cryptographically bound to the document and has the same legal effect as a handwritten signature in every EU member state. Advanced signatures and national e-ID schemes sit in between. This tool creates none of these.

When an image signature is enough - and when it is not

  • Usually fine: delivery and receipt confirmations, internal approvals, school and club consent forms, NDAs, freelance and supplier agreements, rental applications, HR paperwork and other documents where the law does not prescribe a special form and the parties trust each other.
  • Usually not enough: documents that require a qualified signature or handwriting on paper, such as wills, many real estate transfers, deeds that must be witnessed, notarised documents, some powers of attorney and certain court or government filings. The exact list depends on the country.
  • If a bank, court or authority specifies a form of signature, follow it. When in doubt, check with the recipient or a lawyer - this page is general information, not legal advice.

For agreements that may be disputed, an e-signature service that records an audit trail (email, IP address, timestamps) or a qualified signature gives you much stronger proof.

Tips for a clean-looking signature

  • Draw: on a phone, turn the screen sideways for more room. Blue or navy ink looks like a real pen; changing the colour recolours what you already drew.
  • Upload: sign with a black pen on white paper, photograph it in good light and upload the PNG, JPG or WebP file. “Remove white background” (on by default) makes the paper transparent so only the ink lands on the page.
  • Type: the script styles use fonts installed on your system, so the look varies between Windows, macOS, Android and iOS.
  • Size: the slider sets the signature width from 5% to 70% of the page width; it starts at 25%, near the bottom right, where most signature lines are.

The signature is cropped to the ink, saved as a transparent PNG and drawn on the page with its proportions kept. Rotated pages, such as landscape scans, are handled correctly.

Privacy and limitations

Your signature is personal data, and here it never leaves your device: drawing, placing and saving all happen in your browser and neither the document nor the signature image is uploaded or stored.

  • Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first (for example open them with the password and choose “Print → Save as PDF”).
  • Signing adds an image; it does not add a digital signature field or lock the file against editing.
  • If the document also has form fields, fill them first with Fill PDF form, then sign. To combine the signed pages with other files, use Merge PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Is a signature added with this tool legally valid?

+
It is a simple electronic signature - an image of your signature. In the EU, US and UK such signatures generally have legal effect for ordinary contracts, but they are weak evidence if disputed and do not replace a qualified or handwritten signature where the law requires one.

What is the difference between a simple and a qualified electronic signature?

+
A simple signature is any electronic mark of intent, such as a drawn or typed name. A qualified signature (eIDAS) uses a certificate issued after identity verification, is cryptographically tied to the document and counts as handwritten across the EU.

Can I sign a PDF on my phone?

+
Yes. The drawing pad works with touch and stylus, and you can drag the signature into place on the page preview with your finger.

Can I sign or initial every page?

+
Yes. Choose “All pages” to put the signature in the same spot on each page, or “Last page” to sign only the final page.

Is my document or signature uploaded?

+
No. Everything is processed in your browser; neither the PDF nor your signature image is sent to a server.

Why can’t I sign a password-protected PDF?

+
Encrypted documents cannot be edited without decryption, which the browser library does not support. Remove the protection first, for example with “Print → Save as PDF”, and load the new file.
