How to rotate pages in a PDF
- 1.
Open the PDF
Drop the document onto the area above or choose it from your device. Thumbnails of all pages appear below.
- 2.
Rotate pages
Click a thumbnail to turn that page 90° clockwise. To rotate many pages, use “Rotate left”, “Rotate right” or “Rotate 180°” - they apply to all pages, or only to the pages you type in “Pages to rotate” (e.g. 2-4).
- 3.
Save the file
Click “Save rotated PDF”. The new orientation is written into the document permanently.
- 4.
Download the result
Download name-rotated.pdf - the pages now open the right way up in every browser and PDF reader.
How PDF rotation works
Every PDF page has a rotation attribute (/Rotate) that can be 0°, 90°, 180° or 270°. This tool changes only that attribute - the page content is not re-rendered or re-compressed, so quality and selectable text stay exactly as they were and saving is quick even for long documents.
If a page was already rotated in the file (say it is stored at 90°), your rotation is added on top, and the thumbnail shows what you will get after saving.
Note that the “Rotate view” button in Adobe Acrobat Reader, Chrome or Preview usually only changes how the page is shown on your screen and is not saved in the file. Writing the rotation into the document is what makes the pages appear correctly for the recipient, an online form or a printer.
Rotating only some pages
A common case: the scanner fed a few pages in landscape. Type page numbers or ranges in the “Pages to rotate” field, for example 2-4, 7, and press one of the rotate buttons - only those pages change. Leave the field empty to rotate all pages. A single page is quickest to fix by clicking its thumbnail; each click adds 90° clockwise.
Example: a 20-page report where the tables on pages 6-8 and 15 were scanned sideways. Type 6-8, 15, click “Rotate right”, check the thumbnails and save. The result still has 20 pages, 4 of them with a new orientation.
Which rotation do I need? Quick reference
- Text runs bottom to top (page tipped to the left) - click “Rotate right” for +90°.
- Text runs top to bottom (page tipped to the right) - click “Rotate left” for -90°, which is stored as 270°.
- Page is upside down - click “Rotate 180°”.
Rotations add up: two clicks on “Rotate right” give 180°, four bring the page back to where it started. A counter shows how many pages will change (“Rotated pages: 4”), and “Undo rotations” resets every page to the state of the loaded file. Saving stays disabled until at least one page is rotated, so you never download an unchanged copy by accident.
Privacy, protected files and related tools
The file is processed entirely in your browser and is never uploaded. Because only the rotation attribute changes, bookmarks, links and the rest of the document stay intact.
Encrypted or password-protected PDFs cannot be edited here because the in-browser library cannot decrypt them. The tool tells you so; remove the protection first (for example open the file with its password and use “Print → Save as PDF”) and try again.
To delete or reorder pages instead, use Organize PDF. If you are making a PDF from photos, JPG to PDF already respects the camera orientation, so pictures do not end up sideways.
