How to split a PDF file

  1. 1.

    Open the PDF

Drop the document onto the area above or choose it from your device. You will see the page count and, in “Selected pages” mode, a thumbnail of every page.

  2. 2.

    Choose a split mode

Every page, Page ranges (e.g. “1-3, 4-6”), Selected pages into one file, or Every N pages.

  3. 3.

    Check the plan

Below the settings you see how many files will be created and which pages go into each. Mistakes in ranges are flagged as you type.

  4. 4.

    Split and download

Click “Split PDF” (or “Extract pages”). A single result downloads as a PDF, several files come as one ZIP archive.

Four ways to split a PDF

  • Every page - a 20-page document becomes 20 files, named like contract-page-07.pdf, packed into contract-split.zip.
  • Page ranges - each comma-separated entry is one file, so “1-3, 4-6, 9” gives three files: pages 1-3, pages 4-6 and page 9 on its own. An open range like “8-” means “from page 8 to the end”. When you open a file, this mode is preset to split it into two halves.
  • Selected pages - click thumbnails or type numbers, and all chosen pages go into one new file, contract-selected-pages.pdf. This is the fastest way to pull a few pages out of a long document.
  • Every N pages - for example a 100-page scan cut every 25 pages gives four 25-page files.

Example: sending just part of a contract

You have a 36-page contract with appendices and only need to send the signature page (page 12) and Appendix B (pages 30-34). Choose “Selected pages” and type 12, 30-34, or click those thumbnails. You get one 6-page PDF. Pages always keep their original order, whatever order you clicked them in.

To remove pages from a document and keep the rest, or to change the page order, use Organize PDF. To put several files back together, use Merge PDF.

Range syntax, the last part and the split plan

  • In Page ranges mode only a comma or semicolon starts a new file. “1-3 5” without a comma gives one file with pages 1-3 and 5.
  • Ranges that run past the end are trimmed: “1-50” in a 40-page document means pages 1-40. A range lying completely outside the document is reported as an error.
  • In Every N pages mode the last part can be shorter: 10 pages split every 3 gives four files with 3 + 3 + 3 + 1 pages.
  • Before you click the button you see the plan - the number of files and the pages in each (the first 12 entries for long lists).

Split files are named after the original with the part number and page range, so they are easy to tell apart once the ZIP is unpacked.

Quality, privacy and protected files

Pages are copied into the new files without rendering or re-compression, so text stays selectable and images keep their full quality. Each part is roughly as heavy as the pages it contains; if a part is still too big to email, run it through Compress PDF.

Splitting runs locally in your browser, so contracts, invoices or medical records are never uploaded. Password-protected PDFs cannot be split here because the in-browser library cannot decrypt them. The tool shows a message - remove the protection first (for example open the file with its password and save it again via “Print → Save as PDF”) and load it once more.

Frequently asked questions

Can I extract a single page from a PDF?

+
Yes. Choose “Selected pages”, click the thumbnail of the page (or type its number) and click “Extract pages”. You get a new PDF with only that page.

How do I write page ranges?

+
Separate them with commas: “1-3, 5, 8-” means pages 1-3, page 5 and pages 8 to the end. In Page ranges mode each entry becomes its own file; in Selected pages mode they all go into one file.

Will the quality get worse?

+
No. Pages are copied without re-compression - text stays selectable and images and vector graphics keep their original quality.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

+
No. Splitting happens in your browser. Nothing is sent to or stored on a server.

Why can I not split a password-protected PDF?

+
Encrypted documents need to be decrypted, which the in-browser PDF library does not support. Remove the protection in a program that knows the password and open the file again.

How do I get multiple files?

+
When the result has more than one file, you download a single ZIP archive. A single result downloads directly as a PDF.
