How to add a watermark to a photo
- 1.
Choose the watermark type
Type your own text (for example © Jane Smith) or upload a logo, ideally a PNG with a transparent background.
- 2.
Adjust the look
Set size, opacity, rotation and the position on a 3×3 grid. You can also repeat the mark across the whole photo.
- 3.
Add photos
Drop one or many photos. The watermark is applied to each of them and you see a preview straight away.
- 4.
Download
Download the photos one by one or all together as a ZIP.
Text or logo?
Text works well as an author credit or a website address. A logo marks photos with your brand. Use a PNG with transparency to avoid a white rectangle around the mark. The watermark size is a percentage of the photo width, so it looks the same on an 800 px image and on a 6000 px one.
Protecting a photo without ruining it
- A corner mark at 40-60% opacity is a discreet signature for portfolios and social media.
- A tiled pattern at about −30° and 20-30% opacity is much harder to crop out. Use it for client proofs and product photos.
- White text shows up well on dark photos and dark text on light ones. Change the colour if the mark gets lost.
A watermark can be cropped or retouched out, but it makes reusing your photos without credit harder.
What each setting does
| Setting | Range | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Font size | 1-30% of width | at 6% on a 4000 px wide photo the font is 240 px |
| Logo size | 3-100% of width | a 20% logo on a 6000 px photo is 1200 px wide |
| Opacity | 5-100% | 100% is fully solid, 5% is a barely visible trace |
| Rotation | −90° to 90° | applies to both a single mark and the tiled pattern |
| Margin | 0-15% of the shorter side | distance from the edge in position mode |
| Spacing | 0-40% of the shorter side | gap between repeats in the tiled pattern |
Margin and spacing are measured from the shorter side, so portrait and landscape photos of the same resolution look alike. In the tiled pattern every other row is shifted by half a step and the grid rotates with the mark, so the labels never overlap and the corners are covered too.
Common mistakes
- A mark that is too small: a 1-2% signature is hard to read once Instagram scales the photo to 1080 px. Use 4-8% for online publishing.
- A JPG logo: a file without an alpha channel leaves a white box around the logo. Use PNG or WebP with transparency.
- A mark that is easy to crop: one crop removes a corner watermark. If protection matters, move it towards the centre or turn on repeating.
- Overwriting the originals: output files keep the source name, so save them in a separate folder and keep a clean copy.
- Format: “Same as original” keeps the file type. A photo saved as PNG can weigh several times more than a JPG at 85-90% quality.
Privacy and quality
The watermark is applied in your browser to a full-resolution copy of each photo; nothing is uploaded. Saving a new file also strips EXIF data, including GPS location. For JPG and WebP you can choose the quality, while PNG keeps every pixel without loss.
