How to make a GIF from a video

  1. 1.

    Load the video

Drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file onto the area above or click to choose it.

  2. 2.

    Select the clip

Set the start and end (up to 15 s; the first 5 s are selected by default). Play selection shows exactly what goes into the GIF.

  3. 3.

    Adjust the quality

Pick the frames per second (5-20) and the width (240-720 px). Lower values give a lighter file.

  4. 4.

    Create and download

Click Create GIF, check the preview and file size, and download the .gif file.

What decides the size of a GIF?

GIF compresses images far less efficiently than modern video codecs, so file size grows fast. It is driven mainly by number of frames × pixels per frame. The number of frames is simply clip length × frames per second, and the height follows the video's proportions automatically.

Settings (5 s clip, 16:9)FramesTotal pixels
10 fps, 480×270506.5 million
15 fps, 480×270759.7 million
15 fps, 720×4057521.9 million

Going from 720 px to 480 px wide cuts the pixel count by about 56% and usually halves the file. The Frames and GIF size counters update live, and you get a warning before encoding if the settings would produce a very heavy file (over 60 million pixels in total). If the finished GIF is larger than 8 MB, the tool suggests how to slim it down.

Recommended settings

UseLengthfpsWidth
Reaction GIF, meme for a chat2-4 s10320-400 px
Software demo in docs or a README5-10 s8-12600-720 px
Animation in a marketing email3-6 s10-12480-600 px
Fast motion, sports2-3 s15-20360-480 px

The width slider moves in 20 px steps. The GIF is never scaled above the source width, so a 640 px wide video stays at most 640 px. The clip must be between 0.2 and 15 seconds long. For software demos, record your screen with the screen recorder and convert the recording here.

Why the colours look different from the video

The GIF format allows at most 256 colours per frame. To avoid colours flickering from frame to frame, the tool samples up to 8 frames spread across your clip and builds one shared palette for the whole GIF. Flat graphics, UI and cartoons look great this way; gradients, skies and skin tones can show some banding or grain. The GIF loops forever and has no sound, because the format does not support audio.

GIF or a short video?

If you do not strictly need a GIF, a short MP4 or WebM looks better and is often 5-10 times smaller. GIF still wins where an image has to autoplay and loop everywhere without a player: email clients, forums, issue trackers and documentation. To make a short video instead, cut it with trim video and shrink it with the video compressor.

Privacy note: the video is decoded and the GIF is encoded locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, so you can safely convert private or unreleased footage.

Frequently asked questions

Is the video to GIF converter free?

+
Yes. No sign-up and no watermark, and the video is processed only in your browser.

Why is the GIF limited to 15 seconds?

+
Long GIFs become huge and need a lot of memory to create. 15 seconds is a sensible cap; for longer clips a short MP4 or WebM video is the better choice.

How can I make my GIF smaller?

+
Shorten the clip first, then lower the frame rate to 8-10 fps, and finally reduce the width to around 320-480 px.

Will the GIF have sound?

+
No. The GIF format cannot store audio.

Does the GIF loop?

+
Yes. Every GIF created here loops endlessly.

Why does 15 fps play slightly slower than expected?

+
GIF stores frame delays in hundredths of a second, so 15 fps is saved as 70 ms per frame (about 14.3 fps). Values like 10 or 20 fps map exactly.

Which videos can I use?

+
MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV, as long as your browser can decode the video codec inside the file.
