How to remove audio from a video

  1. 1.

    Choose a video

Drag an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file onto the box above or click to pick it from your device.

  2. 2.

    Check the file info

The info panel shows the format, duration, resolution and the audio codec. If the clip has no sound, the tool tells you there is nothing to remove.

  3. 3.

    Click “Remove audio”

The video track is copied into a new file of the same format, without the audio track.

  4. 4.

    Preview and download

Play the result, compare the size before and after, and download it as name-muted.mp4 (or .mov, .webm, .mkv).

Why remove the sound from a video?

  • Privacy - phone clips often pick up conversations, names or a TV in the background that you do not want to share.
  • Copyright - background music can get a video muted or blocked on social platforms. Remove it first, then add a licensed track in your editor.
  • Website backgrounds and loops - browsers only autoplay videos that are muted, so a silent file is the cleanest option for hero videos.
  • Presentations - a silent demo clip will not start blasting sound in the middle of a meeting.

No re-encoding, no quality loss

The tool does not touch the picture. It reads the video packets and writes them into a new container of the same format as the original (MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV), simply leaving the audio track out. Because nothing is decoded and re-compressed, resolution, frame rate and sharpness are identical, and even a large file is done in a few seconds.

Everything runs locally in your browser using WebCodecs. The video is never uploaded, so it is safe for private or work recordings. If the browser cannot write the source format, the file is saved as MP4 and a note tells you so before you start.

How much smaller will the file get?

Audio size is bitrate × duration ÷ 8. A typical phone video carries AAC audio at 128-256 kbps, which is roughly 1-2 MB per minute. For a 5 minute clip that is about 4.8 MB at 128 kbps or 9.6 MB at 256 kbps.

In a 1080p video the picture usually runs at 8-16 Mbps, so the sound is only 1-3% of the file. Muting alone will not make a big video email-friendly - use the video compressor for that. In screen recordings and simple animations with a low video bitrate, audio can be a much bigger share of the file.

Keep the sound instead, or edit it further

  • Need the audio but not the picture? Video to MP3 extracts the sound track to MP3, M4A or WAV.
  • Want only part of the clip? Cut it first with Trim video, then remove the sound.
  • Building a new soundtrack? Prepare the music in the audio cutter and combine it with the silent video in an editor.
  • Need a different container, for example WebM for the web? Run the silent file through the video converter.

This tool removes the whole audio track. Muting only a few seconds, or lowering the volume, requires a video editor.

Frequently asked questions

Is removing audio from a video free?

+
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no file limit other than the memory available to your browser.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

+
No. The file is processed entirely in your browser, so it never leaves your device.

Will the resolution or quality change?

+
No. The picture is copied without re-encoding, so resolution, frame rate and quality stay exactly as in the original.

What format will the muted video be?

+
The same as the original: MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV. Only when the browser cannot write the source format is the result saved as MP4.

What if my video has no sound?

+
The tool detects this, shows a message that there is no audio track and disables the button, because there is nothing to remove.

Can I mute only part of a video?

+
Not here - this tool removes the entire audio track. To silence a few seconds or replace a fragment you need a video editor.
