How overtime pay works in Poland: formula and example
For every overtime hour an employee on a Polish employment contract receives normal pay plus a supplement (Art. 151¹ § 1 Labour Code). With a monthly salary, the hourly rate is your salary divided by the number of working hours in that particular month - so it changes from month to month.
- Hourly rate = base salary ÷ working hours in the month.
- Normal pay = hourly rate × overtime hours.
- Supplement = hourly rate × 50% or 100% × hours of that type.
Example: salary PLN 7,000, March 2026 (176 hours), 10 overtime hours on ordinary days and 4 on a Sunday.
| Item | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly rate | 7,000 ÷ 176 | PLN 39.77 |
| Normal pay | 39.77 × 14 h | PLN 556.78 |
| 50% supplement | 39.77 × 50% × 10 h | PLN 198.85 |
| 100% supplement | 39.77 × 100% × 4 h | PLN 159.08 |
| Total | PLN 914.71 |
The same salary in July (184 hours) gives PLN 38.04 an hour - overtime pays better in months with fewer working hours.
50% or 100%: which supplement applies
| When the overtime is worked | Supplement |
|---|---|
| At night (8 consecutive hours between 21:00 and 7:00 as set by your employer) | 100% |
| On Sundays and public holidays that are not your working days | 100% |
| On a day off given in exchange for Sunday or holiday work | 100% |
| Exceeding the average weekly norm in the settlement period | 100% |
| Any other time (ordinary working day, free Saturday of a 5-day week) | 50% |
The supplement is based on your contractual base pay. If the contract does not separate it, the supplement is calculated from 60% of pay. Instead of money, the employer may give time off: one hour for one hour if you ask for it, or 1.5 hours per overtime hour on the employer's initiative (Art. 151² Labour Code). In that case no supplement is paid.

| Month | Hours | Month | Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 160 | July | 184 |
| February | 160 | August | 160 |
| March | 176 | September | 176 |
| April | 168 | October | 176 |
| May | 160 | November | 160 |
| June | 168 | December | 160 |
In total 2,008 hours (251 working days). Under Art. 130 of the Labour Code it is 8 hours × weekdays, minus 8 hours for each public holiday falling on a day other than Sunday. In 2026 the total is reduced among others by 15 August and 26 December (both Saturdays) and by Christmas Eve on 24 December, a public holiday since 2025.
Overtime limits: 150 hours a year and 48 hours a week
- 150 hours per calendar year - the limit for overtime due to the employer's special needs (Art. 151 § 3). Work regulations, a collective agreement or your contract may set a higher limit.
- An average of 48 hours a week including overtime over the settlement period (Art. 131 § 1). With a one-month period that is about 8 overtime hours a week, e.g. 35.2 hours in March 2026.
- 11 hours of rest per day and 35 hours of uninterrupted rest per week (Art. 132-133).
Overtime needed to save life, health or property or to fix a breakdown does not count towards the 150-hour limit. Part-time employees who work beyond their own hours but within 8 hours a day get a supplement only after exceeding the limit set in their contract.
