Trading Sundays in Poland in 2026
Large shops in Poland can open on 8 Sundays in 2026:
- 25 January - last Sunday of January,
- 29 March - Palm Sunday, a week before Easter (5 April),
- 26 April - last Sunday of April,
- 28 June - last Sunday of June,
- 30 August - last Sunday of August,
- 6, 13 and 20 December - the three Sundays before Christmas Eve.
There are no trading Sundays in September, October or November 2026. On all other Sundays the trading ban applies.
Sunday shopping in December 2026
In December 2026, shops open on three Sundays: 6, 13 and 20 December. Sunday 27 December, right after Christmas, is not a trading Sunday.
Plan your Christmas shopping by Wednesday 23 December. Christmas Eve (Thursday 24 December) and both days of Christmas (25 and 26 December) are public holidays, so large shops are closed from 24 to 27 December. There are no trading restrictions on New Year's Eve, 31 December.
Trading Sundays in Poland in 2027
Poland also has 8 trading Sundays in 2027. Easter falls on 28 March, so Palm Sunday comes earlier than in 2026: 31 January, 21 March (Palm Sunday), 25 April, 27 June, 29 August, and 5, 12 and 19 December. Holy Saturday is 27 March 2027, with shops open until 2 pm.
Are shops open on public holidays in Poland?
No. The trading ban applies on every public holiday, including those that fall between Monday and Saturday. For the rest of 2026, large shops are closed on 1 November (Sunday), 11 November (Wednesday) and 24, 25 and 26 December.
On Holy Saturday shops close at 2 pm. The same rule applied to Christmas Eve until 2024, but since 2025 Christmas Eve has been a public holiday and shops are closed all day. For all holidays and whether today or tomorrow is a day off, see Is today a holiday in Poland?.
How the Sunday trading ban works
Since 2018, a Polish law (the Act of 10 January 2018 restricting trade on Sundays, public holidays and certain other days) has banned most shops from trading on Sundays and public holidays. Article 7 lists the Sundays when the ban does not apply:
- the three Sundays before Christmas Eve (two Sundays before Christmas until 2024),
- the Sunday right before Easter,
- the last Sunday of January, April, June and August.
If the last Sunday of a month is a public holiday, the ban applies and trading does not move to another Sunday. This can only happen in April, when Easter falls on 24 or 25 April. The next time is 2038, which will have just 7 trading Sundays.
The tool calculates Easter with the Gregorian algorithm, so it covers every year from 2020 to 2040. It also includes past exceptions: an extra trading Sunday on 6 December 2020, and December 2023, when Christmas Eve fell on a Sunday and the trading Sundays were 10 and 17 December.
What is open on a non-trading Sunday
The ban covers shops, but Article 6 of the Act lists more than 30 exceptions. On non-trading Sundays and public holidays these can stay open:
- petrol stations and pharmacies,
- bakeries, cake shops, ice cream shops, florists and kiosks selling newspapers, tickets and tobacco,
- shops at railway and bus stations, airports, ports, hotels and hospitals,
- restaurants and cafes,
- online shops,
- shops where the owner, a sole trader, serves customers personally.
Whether a particular shop opens depends on its type and how it is run. On trading Sundays each shop sets its own hours. To plan time off around holidays, use the Poland public holidays and long weekends calendar.
