Is 11 November a holiday in Poland?
Yes. 11 November is Independence Day, a public holiday. In 2026 it falls on a Wednesday, and large shops are closed. Taking 2 days of leave (9-10 or 12-13 November) gives you 5 days off in a row.
Which days are off in Poland
Poland has 14 statutory public holidays under the Act of 18 January 1951. The 14th, Christmas Eve, was added in 2025. Every Sunday is also a day off.
Saturday is not a public holiday. Most employees have it off because the Labour Code sets an average five-day working week (Art. 129 § 1), but people in retail, hospitality or shift work often work on Saturdays.
When a public holiday falls on a Saturday, the employer must give staff another day off in the settlement period (Art. 130 § 2). A holiday on a Sunday does not give an extra day off. In 2026, 15 August and 26 December fall on a Saturday.
Days that are not public holidays
Some days feel like holidays in Poland but are normal working days:
- Holy Saturday (shops close at 2 pm),
- All Souls' Day, 2 November,
- New Year's Eve, 31 December,
- Fat Thursday, Valentine's Day, Women's Day and Mother's Day.
Your employer may also give you a day off, for example in place of a Saturday holiday or after working on a Sunday. The tool cannot include these because they depend on each workplace.
Are shops open on public holidays in Poland?
No. Large shops are closed on every public holiday, including those that fall on a weekday, such as 11 November or Corpus Christi. Petrol stations, pharmacies, bakeries and shops run personally by their owner can stay open. On Sundays, shops are closed except on the eight trading Sundays a year.
