How to convert WebP to PNG

  1. 1.

    Add WebP files

Drop .webp files onto the box above, choose them from your device or paste an image (Ctrl+V).

  2. 2.

    Wait a moment

Conversion starts automatically - PNG is lossless, so there is no quality to set.

  3. 3.

    Download PNG

Download the files one by one or all together as a ZIP.

When to choose PNG over JPG

  • Transparency - logos, icons, cut-out products. PNG keeps the alpha channel, JPG does not.
  • Further editing - PNG adds no loss on repeated saves, so it makes a good working file.
  • Graphics with text and sharp edges - screenshots, diagrams and infographics look cleaner in PNG than in JPG.

For an ordinary photo you want to send or print, WebP to JPG gives a much smaller file.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the WebP?

PNG stores the image losslessly (DEFLATE compression), so every pixel is kept exactly. A photo that weighs 200 KB as WebP can take 1.5-3 MB as PNG. Converting does not improve an image that was previously compressed with loss - but it saves it without any further loss.

Example: a 1200×800 px graphic with a transparent background weighs about 60 KB as WebP and usually 300-900 KB as PNG, depending on the number of colours and gradients.

Typical situations and tips

  • A WebP sticker or emoji from a messenger - saving to PNG keeps the transparent background, so you can drop it into a slide or document without a white frame.
  • A graphic from an online shop you want to edit - PNG is a good working file: repeated saves in an editor will not degrade it.
  • Animated WebP - PNG saves only the first frame; animation cannot be carried into a regular PNG.
  • File too big to send - if you do not need transparency, choose WebP to JPG; the file will be several times smaller.
  • Icon or favicon - turn the PNG into a full icon set with the favicon generator.

The dimensions stay the same - the converter only changes the file format, and the file keeps its name with a .png extension. That is why PNG is no way to “fix” a blurry thumbnail: a 300×300 px image stays 300×300 px, just stored losslessly and heavier.

Privacy

Conversion runs entirely in your browser (Canvas API). Files are never sent to a server, so you can safely convert private photos, scans and company graphics. Saving to a new format also strips EXIF metadata, including GPS coordinates.

Frequently asked questions

Is WebP to PNG conversion lossless?

+
Yes. PNG stores exactly the pixels decoded from the WebP file. It cannot, however, restore detail that a lossy WebP discarded earlier.

Will the transparent background be kept?

+
Yes. PNG fully supports transparency and semi-transparency.

Why is the PNG file so large?

+
PNG is lossless and discards no data. For photos that means files several times bigger than WebP or JPG.

Can I open the result in Photoshop or GIMP?

+
Yes. PNG works in every graphics program, document editor and operating system.

Can I convert many WebP files at once?

+
Yes. Add as many files as you like - each one is saved as PNG and you can download them all in one ZIP archive.
