WebP can combine transparency with lossy compression, which PNG cannot. A cut-out product photo can weigh 3 MB as PNG and 200 KB as WebP, with the transparent background intact.

When to convert PNG to WebP, and when not to

  • Worth it: photos saved as PNG, product photos with transparent backgrounds, large illustrations and screenshots on a website.
  • Be careful: small icons and logos. The gain can be small, and low quality may blur the edges. Use 90-100%.
  • Not worth it: source files for further editing and graphics for print. Keep those as PNG.

Example: an online shop has 40 product photos in PNG with transparent backgrounds, about 1.5 MB each, so 60 MB on a single category page. Converted to WebP at 85% quality, each usually weighs 100-200 KB and the whole page a few megabytes, so it loads faster, especially on phones. Keep the original PNGs as your editing source.

Which quality to use for PNG to WebP

The converter saves lossy WebP at the quality chosen with the slider (10-100%, 85% by default). PNG holds photos as well as graphics with text and logos, so match the quality to the content:

Type of PNGRecommended qualityWatch out for
Photo saved as PNG75-85%savings usually 80-95%
Cut-out product80-90%edges next to transparency
Screenshot with text90-100%blurry letters at low quality
Logo, icon, few colours90-100%WebP can end up larger than PNG

After converting, compare the result with the original; both sizes are shown next to every file. If the gain is small, keep the PNG or try the image compressor, which shrinks PNG by reducing the colour palette.

Privacy

Conversion runs entirely in your browser (Canvas API). Files are never sent to a server, so you can safely convert private photos, scans and company graphics. Saving to a new format also strips EXIF metadata, including GPS coordinates.

Frequently asked questions

Will WebP keep the transparent background of my PNG?

+
Yes. WebP supports an alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels are preserved.

Why is WebP so much smaller than PNG?

+
PNG stores every pixel losslessly, which makes huge files for photos. Lossy WebP discards detail the eye cannot see, so a photo saved as PNG usually becomes several times smaller.

My WebP came out bigger than the PNG - why?

+
It happens with very small graphics that use only a few colours, such as icons, which PNG compresses very well. In that case, keep the original PNG.

Can I use WebP in WordPress?

+
Yes. WordPress has supported uploading WebP images since version 5.8 (2021).

Is the conversion free?

+
Yes, with no file limits, no watermarks and no account needed.
