Redact a PDF online - permanently black out names, IDs, account numbers and signatures

A black rectangle drawn in a PDF editor usually leaves the text underneath. This tool turns pages with marks into images with the boxes burned in, so the hidden data cannot be recovered from the file. Your document never leaves your device.

Pages with marks are turned into images

That is how the text under a black box is removed from the file instead of just hidden. A page like that loses its text layer (you cannot search it or select text on it), and links and form fields on it stop working. Pages without marks stay unchanged. Keep the original and check the result after saving.

How to redact a PDF online

  1. 1.

    Open the PDF

Drop the document onto the area above or choose it from your device. If the file has a password, enter it. The password is only used in your browser.

  2. 2.

    Search for the data (optional)

Tick the patterns you need (national ID number, bank account, email, phone) and add your own phrases, such as a surname. Click "Search the document", untick matches you do not want to hide and add the rest as boxes.

  3. 3.

    Mark the rest by hand

Drag across the page to draw a box. You can move a box, resize it with the corner handle or delete it. Pick black or white. On a phone, switch the mode to "Scroll" to move the page with your finger.

  4. 4.

    Choose the save quality

Set the resolution of the pages with marks (150, 200 or 300 DPI) and the image format (JPEG or PNG). Keep metadata removal on if the title or author of the file should disappear too.

  5. 5.

    Save and check the result

Click "Redact and save PDF", download the file, open it and try to select text under the boxes. You should not be able to select anything on the redacted pages.

Why a black box in a PDF editor is not enough

A rectangle, highlight or black text background in Word, a PDF editor or a notes app is a separate object laid over the page. The text underneath stays in the file: it can be selected, copied and found by search, and often it is enough to delete or move the rectangle to see everything. A black highlight in Word, saved as PDF, also leaves text that can be copied.

This tool works differently. It draws each page with marks as an image, burns the boxes into the pixels and builds a new PDF page from that image. In the result there is no text under a box, because a solid colour took its place.

What happens to the pages after redaction

  • Pages with marks become images (JPEG or PNG, 150, 200 or 300 DPI). The page size stays the same, but the page loses its text layer: you cannot search it or select text on it, and links and form fields disappear.
  • Pages without marks are copied unchanged, with their text, links and images at the original quality. Bookmarks and the document outline are not carried over to the new file.
  • A password-protected file: its pages cannot be copied unchanged, so every page becomes an image and the result has no password.
  • Metadata (title, author, subject, keywords) is removed by default. The name of the program that created the file is never kept. Turning the option off keeps the first four fields.

Redaction cannot be undone in the output file, so keep the original.

How the data search works

The search reads the document's text layer, the same one you use when you select text in a PDF viewer. The ready-made patterns recognize:

  • PESEL (the Polish national ID number): 11 digits. If the checksum does not match, the match is flagged, because it may be a different number.
  • bank account numbers: 26 digits, also with a PL prefix and with spaces or hyphens between digits,
  • email addresses,
  • phone numbers: mobile (9 digits, also with +48 or 0048) and landline with an area code.

Your own phrases, such as a surname or a street, are found regardless of letter case and accents. "Whole words only" skips matches inside longer words. Every match appears in a list and on the page preview. Untick the ones you do not want to hide and add the rest as boxes.

The search has limits. It cannot read text in a scan or a photo because it has no character recognition (OCR). Mark such a page by hand, or first add a text layer with OCR PDF. The position of letters inside a long piece of text is estimated, so look at every box in the preview and adjust it by hand when needed.

What else to check before you send the file

  • The same data in other places: the header, the footer, next to a signature and on later pages. After saving, the tool checks the file for your searched patterns and phrases, but only in the text layer.
  • Comments and other annotations on pages without marks stay in the file.
  • The file name. The result gets a "-redacted" ending, but the rest of the name is unchanged, so "contract-john-smith.pdf" still reveals the name.
  • Context. Hidden data can sometimes be guessed from what surrounds it: the length of a box, a date or a company name. Blacking out parts of a document does not guarantee that it is anonymous under data protection law.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a black box in Word or an ordinary PDF editor not enough?

+
The box is a separate object placed over the page, and the text under it stays in the file. It can be selected, copied and searched, and often deleting the box is enough to see the data. This tool turns the whole page with marks into an image with the boxes burned in, so the text underneath is no longer in the file.

Can the text under a box be recovered from a redacted page?

+
Not from the box itself: the file holds an image in which that area is a solid colour. A reader still sees everything you did not cover, and may infer something from context, for example from the length of a box or the words around it.

Can I still select and copy text in the rest of the document?

+
Yes, but only on pages where you marked nothing. Those pages are copied unchanged. Redacted pages are images, so you cannot select or search text on them, and links and form fields on them disappear.

Why did the search miss data I can see on the page?

+
Most often the page is a scan or a photo, so it has no text that can be searched. The tool does not read letters from an image. Mark such data by hand, or run OCR PDF first. It can also happen that the text is stored as shapes (outlines), or the digits are split in an unusual way. A PESEL has to be 11 digits without spaces, and a bank account 26 digits with optional spaces or hyphens.

Which resolution and format should I choose?

+
The default 200 DPI is enough for reading on screen and ordinary printing. 150 DPI gives a smaller file, and 300 DPI keeps small text sharp. A higher resolution means a bigger file and a longer save. JPEG is the usual choice for scans and photos because it gives smaller files. PNG loses no quality and keeps sharp text on a plain background well, but with photos it can be much bigger. In our test (an A4 page with a few lines of text and no photos) JPEG was 77 KB at 150 DPI, 114 KB at 200 DPI and 199 KB at 300 DPI, while PNG was 48, 64 and 114 KB. This only affects pages with marks.

Can I redact a password-protected PDF?

+
Yes. Enter the password and the tool opens the document in your browser only. In the result every page is an image and the file has no password. If you need protection, add it after redacting with a separate tool.

Is the document uploaded to a server?

+
No. Searching, redacting and saving all run in your browser. The file, the password and your marks stay on your device.

Does redaction mean the document is anonymized under GDPR?

+
The tool removes the parts you point to from the page, both visually and as text. Whether the document is anonymous depends on whether the remaining data (dates, names, context) lets someone be identified. That judgement is yours; the tool cannot confirm it.

Can I undo a redaction?

+
Not in the output file. The marks are burned into the page image. Your original stays with you, so keep it and, if you make a mistake, mark the areas again.
