How to make a meme
- 1.
Choose the base
Upload your own photo, or switch to “Blank background” and pick a colour and aspect ratio.
- 2.
Type the captions
Fill in the top and bottom text. “Add caption” creates more text boxes - drag each one anywhere on the image.
- 3.
Adjust the style
Set the text size, font, colour and outline width. The default is the classic look: white uppercase letters with a black outline.
- 4.
Download
Save the finished meme as PNG (lossless) or JPG (smaller file).
Why white text with a black outline?
It is the classic image-macro style: a heavy sans-serif font (usually Impact), all caps, white fill and a black outline. This combination stays readable on any background, light or dark, and survives being shrunk by social networks. If your system has no Impact font, the browser falls back to a similar heavy font.
Tips for a good meme
- Keep it short - the text should be readable in a second, ideally up to 8-10 words per line.
- Two lines - the top one sets up the context, the bottom one delivers the punchline.
- Placement - do not cover faces or the key part of the photo; move extra captions into empty areas.
- Resolution - a bigger photo gives sharper text; the tool keeps the original size up to 2400 px on the longer side.
How the text settings work
| Setting | Range | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Text size | 2-25% of the image width | 9% by default - on a 1000 px image the font is 90 px; each caption has its own size |
| Outline width | 0-25% of the letter size | 12% by default; 0 turns the outline off |
| Font | Impact, Arial, comic | shared by all captions |
| UPPERCASE | on/off | switches text to capitals without retyping |
Long text wraps automatically at 94% of the image width, and very long words (such as web addresses) are split. Press Enter to add your own line break. A blank background is 1000 px wide in the 1:1, 4:3 and 16:9 ratios, or 1000 px tall in the 9:16 portrait ratio - a good starting point for text-only memes and quote cards.
PNG or JPG?
PNG is lossless, so the edges of the letters and outline stay perfectly crisp - the best choice for memes on a plain background and graphics with lots of text. JPG (92% quality) is usually several times smaller for photos, but small compression artefacts may appear around the letters. Photos larger than 2400 px on the longer side are scaled down to that size before editing, which is more than enough for Facebook, Instagram, Reddit or messengers that downscale images anyway. If the file is still too heavy, shrink it with the image compressor. For styled text on photos without the meme look, try add text to image.
Copyright and templates
The generator ships no ready-made meme templates - you only work with your own images. Photos, artwork and film stills are usually protected by copyright, so use your own pictures or material you have the rights or a licence to use (for example Creative Commons). Be careful when posting other people’s faces too. Your image is processed only in your browser.
