How to convert AVIF to PNG
- 1.
Add AVIF files
Drop .avif files onto the box above, choose them from your device or paste an image (Ctrl+V).
- 2.
Wait a moment
The conversion starts automatically. PNG is lossless, so there is no quality slider.
- 3.
Download PNG
Download the files one by one or all together as a ZIP.
When to choose PNG over JPG
- Transparency: logos, icons and cut-out products. PNG keeps the alpha channel, JPG has none.
- Further editing: repeated saves in PNG add no loss, so the file works as a working copy.
- Screenshots, diagrams and graphics with text: sharp edges look cleaner in PNG than in JPG.
An ordinary photo you want to send or print will be much smaller after AVIF to JPG.
What happens to transparency?
AVIF can carry an alpha channel, and so can PNG. A transparent background stays transparent, and so do semi-transparent pixels such as a soft shadow or the smooth edge of a cut-out product. In the result list the thumbnail shows these areas on a checkerboard. You can drop the file into a slide, document or design without a white box around it.
Why is the PNG so large?
AVIF usually compresses with loss and is very economical. PNG stores every pixel without loss. A 4000×3000 px photo has 12 million pixels, which is 36 MB uncompressed. PNG shrinks that with lossless compression, but files made from photos can still be many times larger than the source AVIF. You see the size of each result next to the file.
The conversion does not add detail the AVIF no longer had. A blurry 300×300 px image stays a blurry 300×300 px image, only heavier.
Colour depth and HDR
AVIF can store 10-bit and 12-bit colour, including HDR photos. The PNG from this tool has 8 bits per channel, the standard colour range. An HDR photo is therefore saved with ordinary colour, and bright areas may look slightly different from the original.
What to do with a PNG that is too big
- Shrink the dimensions with the image resizer. An image on a web page does not need to be wider than the space where it is shown.
- Use the image compressor, which reduces PNG files by cutting the colour palette.
- If you do not need transparency, choose AVIF to JPG.
Privacy
Your browser opens the AVIF and the PNG is created on your device. Files are not sent to a server.
