How to convert AVIF to JPG
- 1.
Add AVIF files
Drop .avif files onto the box above, choose them from your device or paste an image (Ctrl+V).
- 2.
Set quality and background
A quality of 85% (the default) is enough for most uses. If the AVIF has transparency, pick a background colour instead of white.
- 3.
Download JPG
Download the files one by one or all together as a ZIP.
What is AVIF?
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is an image format developed by the Alliance for Open Media on top of the AV1 video codec. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency and 10-bit colour (HDR). At similar quality an AVIF file is usually smaller than a JPG, which is why online shops, news sites and content delivery networks (CDNs) use it.
Where do AVIF files come from?
Most often from your browser. When you use "Save image as" on a web page, you get the same file the server sent to the browser. Many sites send AVIF to every browser that supports it, so a picture that looks like an ordinary JPG on the page ends up on your disk as .avif. Some graphics programs and web image optimisation tools also write AVIF files.
Why will my AVIF file not open?
AVIF is much newer than JPG, which has been around since 1992, so older programs do not know it. Current browsers open AVIF without trouble, but on Windows the File Explorer preview and the Photos app may need an extension installed from the Microsoft Store. Some editors, CMS platforms, classified-ad sites and job application forms reject AVIF outright. All of them accept JPG.
What changes when you save as JPG?
| Feature | AVIF | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| Transparency | yes | none, the background is filled with the colour you choose |
| Colour depth | 8, 10 or 12 bits per channel | 8 bits per channel |
| Size at similar quality | smaller | larger |
| Compatibility | current browsers and newer programs | practically everything |
JPG is a lossy format, so saving adds another round of compression to an image that was already compressed. At 85-90% quality the difference is usually invisible. Dimensions in pixels stay the same, and EXIF metadata (date, camera model, GPS location) is not copied to the new file. An HDR photo is saved in the standard colour range, so bright areas may look slightly different from the original.
Which JPG quality should you choose?
- 90-95%: printing, archive, further editing.
- 80-85%: email attachment, messenger, website.
- 70-80%: a form with a file size limit.
The JPG will usually be larger than the source AVIF. You will see an orange "larger" label on the result, which is expected for this conversion. If the file is still over a limit, shrink its dimensions with the image resizer or fit it to the limit with image to target size.
Privacy
Your browser opens the AVIF and the JPG is created on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, so you can convert private photos and scans too.
