How to extract images from a PDF

  1. 1.

    Load the PDF

Drop the file above. Password-protected files can be unlocked with the password, which never leaves your device.

  2. 2.

    Filter

Set a minimum size (50-500 px on the shorter side) to hide icons and lines, and choose PNG (lossless) or JPG (smaller).

  3. 3.

    Extract

Click “Extract images” - thumbnails appear page by page with their pixel size.

  4. 4.

    Download

Download single images or all of them as a ZIP.

Extracting images vs. saving pages as JPG

These are two different operations:

  • Extracting images (this tool) pulls out the raster images exactly at the resolution they were embedded in. A 3000×2000 px photo shrunk to 8 cm on the page is still saved as 3000×2000 px. Text and vector graphics are not included.
  • Saving pages as images (PDF to JPG) takes a “snapshot” of the whole page - text, tables and vector charts included - at the DPI you choose.

If a chart, diagram or logo is missing from the list, it is almost certainly vector artwork - save the page as JPG instead.

PNG or JPG? Quality and file size

Images inside a PDF are stored in various encodings (JPEG, JPEG 2000, Flate, CCITT, JBIG2). The tool decodes them to pixels and saves them again:

FormatAdvantagesChoose it for
PNGLossless, keeps transparencylogos, diagrams, black & white scans, further editing
JPG (92%)Several times smaller filephotos, web publishing, e-mail

Pixel dimensions always match the original. For photos that were JPEG inside the PDF, saving as PNG produces a bigger file without improving quality - JPG is the better choice there. To shrink extracted photos further, use the image compressor.

Password-protected files and common problems

  • Password-protected PDF - enter the open password; the document is decrypted only in your browser's memory.
  • “No images found” - the document contains only text and vector graphics, or every image is smaller than the selected filter. Switch the filter to “All images”.
  • The same image several times - e.g. a logo in the header of every page. An image reused on one page is listed once, but it can appear again on other pages; just download one copy.
  • Scanned documents - each page of a scan is usually one image, so the result resembles saving pages as JPG, but at the scanner's native resolution. To get the text from such scans, use OCR PDF.
  • Unusual formats - a few images with rare encodings or masks may be skipped; the tool reports how many.

For very large files the list is limited to the first 500 images.

Frequently asked questions

How do I save a picture from a PDF?

+
Load the PDF above - all embedded pictures appear as thumbnails. Click download under the one you want or download them all as a ZIP.

Do images keep their original resolution?

+
Yes. Each image is saved at the pixel size it has inside the PDF, however small it looks on the page.

Why is a chart or logo missing?

+
It is probably vector artwork, not an image. Save the page as an image with PDF to JPG instead.

Can I extract images from a password-protected PDF?

+
Yes, if you know the open password. Enter it after loading the file - it is not sent anywhere.

PNG or JPG - which should I choose?

+
PNG for logos, diagrams and anything you will edit further (lossless, keeps transparency); JPG for photos, because the file is several times smaller.

Is my PDF uploaded?

+
No. Analysis and saving happen entirely in your browser.
