When to convert JPG to PNG

  • Further editing - every JPG save adds new loss. A PNG working file can be saved again and again without degrading.
  • Site requirements - some platforms, generators and print services insist on PNG files.
  • Graphics with text - later edits such as captions and arrows stay crisp in PNG, without artefacts.

Will PNG improve quality or add transparency?

No. The conversion stores exactly what is in the JPG file - it cannot bring back detail lost to JPG compression. It does not remove the background either: JPG has no transparency, so the PNG will have a solid, opaque background. To cut out a background, use the background remover or a graphics editor. Remember that the PNG will be several times bigger than the JPG - a 3 MB 12 MP photo can grow to 15-20 MB.

How big will the PNG be? Examples

JPG imageJPG sizePNG size (approx.)
Phone photo 4032×3024 (12 MP)≈ 3 MB≈ 15-20 MB
Full HD photo 1920×1080≈ 400 KB≈ 3-4 MB
Document scan 2480×3508 (A4, 300 dpi)≈ 1 MB≈ 5-10 MB
Simple diagram 800×600≈ 80 KB≈ 100-300 KB

The size grows because PNG losslessly stores the JPG’s noise and artefacts too. If a site requires PNG but has a size limit, first resize the photo. If you just need a lighter file for a website, JPG to WebP is the better choice, and to embed an image in HTML or CSS use image to Base64.

Rule of thumb: keep JPG for photos you only view and share; choose PNG when the file will be edited repeatedly, get text, arrows or other graphics added, or when the place you upload it to demands it.

Privacy

Conversion runs entirely in your browser (Canvas API). Files are never sent to a server, so you can safely convert private photos, scans and company graphics. Saving to a new format also strips EXIF metadata, including GPS coordinates.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

+
No. PNG keeps the image without further loss but does not restore detail lost in the JPG.

Will the background be transparent after conversion?

+
No. A JPG carries no transparency information, so the PNG background stays exactly as in the photo.

Why is the PNG much bigger than the JPG?

+
PNG compresses losslessly and throws no data away. For photos that usually means files 3-8 times bigger.

Can I convert several photos at once?

+
Yes. Add as many files as you like and download them as a ZIP archive.

Does the conversion change the resolution?

+
No. The PNG has exactly the same pixel dimensions as the source JPG. EXIF metadata such as GPS location is not copied to the new file.
