What is BMP?

BMP (bitmap) is one of the oldest graphics formats on Windows. It usually stores the colour of every pixel without compression, with a depth from 1 to 32 bits per pixel. Such a file is simple to read but very large.

How big is a BMP compared with a JPG?

An uncompressed 24-bit BMP takes about 3 bytes per pixel, whatever the picture shows:

DimensionsPixelsBMP size (24-bit)
1920×1080 px2,073,600about 6.2 MB
3000×2000 px6,000,000about 18 MB
4000×3000 px12,000,000about 36 MB

In this table 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes. The JPG of the same image depends on its content and the quality you set, but it is usually a fraction of the values above. You see the exact numbers next to each file after conversion.

Where do BMP files come from?

Older versions of Paint on Windows saved images as BMP. Some scanners, programs bundled with devices and old photo archives also use it. Such files easily exceed attachment and upload limits, and some sites do not accept BMP at all.

Which JPG quality suits a BMP?

What you are convertingQuality
A photo80-90%
A document scan or a screenshot with text90-95%
An image that must fit a form size limit70-80%

JPG is lossy and BMP is usually lossless, so after conversion the file cannot be restored to its exact original state. At low quality, small text gets surrounded by noise. Drawings with flat colours and sharp edges, such as simple Paint graphics, are better saved as PNG: choose the output format in the image converter.

Transparency and dimensions

An ordinary BMP has no transparency. If a file did contain it, JPG cannot keep it: transparent pixels are filled with the colour you choose, white by default. The pixel dimensions do not change. If you need a smaller image, use the image resizer.

Privacy

Your browser opens the BMP and the JPG is created on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, so you can convert document scans as well.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a BMP file so big?

+
BMP usually does not compress data: every pixel takes a fixed number of bytes. In a 24-bit BMP that is 3 bytes per pixel, so a 4000×3000 px image is about 36 MB.

Will converting BMP to JPG reduce quality?

+
Yes, but at 85-90% quality the difference is usually invisible. JPG discards some detail the eye does not notice. For scans and text choose 90-95%.

Can the tool read every BMP file?

+
Your browser decoder reads the BMP. Files in rare variants or corrupted files may fail to open. The tool then lists the files it could not read.

Can I convert BMP to PNG instead?

+
Yes. Choose PNG as the output format in the image converter. PNG is lossless and handles drawings with flat colours well.

Can I convert many files at once?

+
Yes. Add as many BMP files as you like and download the results together in a ZIP archive.
