How cumulative inflation is calculated

Cumulative inflation is found by multiplying the yearly price indices, not by adding them up. GUS publishes each year’s index as “previous year = 100”, so 103.6 becomes a multiplier of 1.036, and the calculator multiplies the indices for every year after the base year.

Example: PLN 1,000 from 2015 in 2025 prices = 1,000 × 0.994 (2016) × 1.020 × 1.016 × 1.023 × 1.034 × 1.051 × 1.144 × 1.114 × 1.036 × 1.036 (2025) = PLN 1,566.43. Prices rose by 56.64% in total, or 4.59% a year on average, and PLN 1,000 from 2015 now buys only about 64% of what it used to.

Adding the yearly rates instead would give roughly 46.8% - a common mistake that understates cumulative inflation.

The figures come from GUS releases on annual consumer price indices. For 2026 we use an estimate based on the January-September readings (between 2.1% and 4.0% year on year); GUS will publish the final number in mid-January 2027. The highest inflation since 1989 was in 1990 (585.8%), while in 2015-2016 prices actually fell (deflation). PLN 1,000 from 2020 is worth about PLN 1,437.58 in 2025 prices, which shows how strongly the 2022-2023 price shock hit household budgets.

Amounts before 1995 and the redenomination

Enter pre-1995 amounts in new złoty. On 1 January 1995 Poland redenominated its currency: 10,000 old złoty became 1 new złoty. A monthly salary of 2,000,000 zł in 1993 is therefore PLN 200 after redenomination.

Price indices do not depend on the redenomination, so once the amount is converted the calculator works correctly. PLN 1,000 (new złoty) from 1995 equals about PLN 4,043.52 in 2025 prices - prices more than quadrupled over that period.

Limitations and what inflation means for your savings

  • Annual averages, not months: the result compares the average price level across whole years, so an amount from January and one from December of the same year are treated the same.
  • Average basket: CPI tracks the spending of a typical Polish household. Rents, flat prices, fuel or food may have risen faster or slower than the index.
  • Not an exchange rate: the calculator measures price changes inside Poland. It does not tell you how the złoty moved against the euro or the dollar.
  • Your savings: to keep their value, savings must earn more after tax than inflation. Compare a term deposit with Polish treasury bonds - the COI and EDO bonds are indexed to this same CPI.
