How to convert M4A to MP3
- 1.
Load the M4A file
Drop a .m4a or .aac file onto the area above. On an iPhone, save the memo to the Files app first and pick it from there.
- 2.
Choose the quality
Speech needs 96-128 kb/s, music 192 kb/s or more. Mono saves space for voice recordings.
- 3.
Click "Convert to MP3"
Short memos finish in a few seconds; longer files show a progress bar.
- 4.
Download
Check the result in the player and download the MP3, which keeps the original file name.
What is an M4A file?
M4A is an MPEG-4 container holding audio only, almost always compressed with AAC. It is used by the iPhone Voice Memos app, iTunes and Apple Music downloads, WhatsApp on some phones and many podcast tools. AAC is newer than MP3 and usually sounds a little better at the same bitrate, but MP3 wins on compatibility: older car stereos, USB speakers, transcription services and some upload forms accept only MP3.
Does converting reduce quality?
Both AAC and MP3 are lossy, so going from one to the other adds a small extra loss. Keep it inaudible by choosing an MP3 bitrate equal to or higher than the source - for example 192 kb/s for a 128 kb/s M4A. For voice memos the difference is practically impossible to hear.
A typical iPhone voice memo is mono AAC. Saved as Mono MP3 at 96 kb/s, an hour of speech takes 96 × 3,600 ÷ 8 = 43,200 KB, about 43 MB - easy to share or feed into a transcription tool.
Limitations
- DRM-protected files (old iTunes purchases with the .m4p extension) cannot be decoded in a browser.
- Cover art and chapters are not carried over - the MP3 contains only the sound.
- M4B audiobooks usually convert like any M4A file, as long as they are not DRM-protected.
- Long recordings are processed in memory, so on an older phone a one-hour file may take a few minutes.
If you choose a file that is not M4A, the tool tells you and still tries to convert it. For other target formats use the audio converter.
After the conversion
Need only part of a long memo? Trim it with the audio cutter. Several short memos can be joined into one file with merge audio, with an optional pause between them. Everything, including this conversion, runs locally in your browser, so private conversations and interviews never reach a server.
Quick sizing guide for the MP3: a 2-minute memo at 128 kb/s is about 1.9 MB, a 30-minute meeting at 96 kb/s Mono is about 21 MB, and a 4-minute song at 192 kb/s is about 5.8 MB. The estimated size appears before you click convert, so you can adjust the bitrate first.
